FullSizeRenderThe Town of Resaca at their latest council meeting unveiled new signage in a small ceremony to recognize that Resaca is an official Purple Heart City. The four signs will be placed at each city limit sign in Resaca to let travelers know of the special designation the city holds.

Front row, left to right: Councilman Nathan Wyatt, Military Order of the Purple Heart’s Larry Fleming, Walter Printup and Military Order of the Purple Heart Rome Chapter 525 Commander Marvin Garner. Back row, left to right: Councilman Todd Rutledge, Resaca Mayor Samuel Allen and Councilman Justin Barton.

“On April 26, 2014, Governor Nathan Deal officially designated August 7 a Purple Heart Day in Georgia to remember and recognize veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart Medal,” said Councilman Nathan Wyatt. “On November 11, 2014, Mayor Samuel Allen and the Town Council proclaimed Resaca as a Purple Heart City.”

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy or posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action. It is specifically a combat decoration.

The Purple Heart is the oldest award still given to U.S. Military members.

“Today, Resaca is demonstrating that it is honoring the sacrifice of those men and women who have served in the United States military and those who were wounded and killed in action,” said Wyatt. “And also awarded to family who have lost a loved one. We cannot thank you enough for the sacrifice you have made for us, and this great country we live in. If it was not for you and the ones before us who have gone on, we would not have this country and be here today with the freedom we have. We would like to thank every military member, Purple Heart recipient and veterans of all armed forces. God bless you and thank you so much.”

Wyatt then presented the signage to Mayor Nathan Wyatt, Councilman Justin Barton and Councilman Todd Rutledge.

The next meeting of the Resaca Town Council will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 at the Resaca Town Hall, located at 330 Walker Street in Resaca.
